BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Former UAB All-America golfer Paul Dunne has been named to the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team that will compete at Royal Lytham and St. Annes in September.
Dunne was named to the GB&I squad that will face the USA at Royal Lytham and St. Annes Sept. 12-13 in the 45th Walker Cup match.
“This was a big goal for Paul this year,” said UAB head coach Alan Murray. “It was a very competitive battle to make the team and shows the strength in depth that GB&I golf has right now. Paul absolutely deserves this. He had to play very well this summer to ensure he got picked and his performances at the NCAAs, The Brabazon Trophy, The British Open, The European Amateur and the U.S. Amateur were truly excellent. He played his best golf in the biggest tournaments which really shows you his class as a player.
Dunne is one of five Irish players named to the team, joining Jack Hume, Gary Hurley, Gavin Moynihan and Cormac Sharvin.
Dunne, who capped off his UAB career in May by finishing fifth at the NCAA Championships, enjoyed a memorable summer of competition. He was the leader after 54 holes at The Open Championship in July and last week reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur.
“It is a massive honor for him, his family, his golf club and country, and of course, something that our program takes great pride in. He is the first Blazer since Graeme McDowell in 2003 to be selected for the Walker Cup. It is a fitting end to a fabulous amateur career in my opinion. I hope he can add to his medal and trophy haul with a Walker Cup winners medal!
