BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former UAB baseball player and All-Conference USA performer John Frost has been named UAB baseball's Director of Operations, head coach Brian Shoop announced Thursday.
"John Frost had a great playing career for us at UAB and means so much to our program," Shoop said. "I remember his first at-bat as a Blazer. He was hitting fourth in his first college game and doubled down the left field line at Mississippi State. He went on to have a great career here, leading C-USA in doubles his senior year when he was named First Team All-Conference. He of course was part of the first UAB team to win a C-USA championship and actually caught the last out in 2012 which started the dog pile celebration."
Frost was a four-year starter for the program. He played in the designated hitter role as a freshman, played first as a sophomore and junior, and moved to third for his senior campaign. He was named an All-Conference USA First Team honoree in 2013 and was also a C-USA All-Freshman honoree in 2010.
The Decatur, Ala. native earned C-USA All-Tournament team honors in back-to-back seasons in 2011 and 2012, helping lead the Blazers to the C-USA Tournament Championship as a junior.
Frost finished his Blazer career with 214 starts in 222 games, and a .298 batting average at the plate. He totaled more than 150 RBI and is UAB's all-time leader in at-bats with 860. He also ranks in the UAB career top-10 list in hits (256), doubles (46), RBI (159) and total bases (346).
Frost will oversee all logistical aspects of the program, including team travel, maintaining Young Memorial Field, and organizing both fall and summer camps for the Blazers.
"John becomes just our second Director of Operations," Shoop added. "Ben Drust of course has taken a head high school coaching position in Georgia, and we have great confidence that John will continue the great job that Benny did in his six years here. It is fantastic to have John back in our baseball family."
