BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team will be one of 10 teams to compete in the 2015 Women's Cancun Challenge, held Nov. 26-28 at the all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya near Cancun, Mexico.
This year's field includes Duke (ACC), Georgia Tech (ACC), High Point (Big South), Idaho (Big Sky), Iowa State (Big 12), NC State (ACC), Northern Iowa (MVC), Seton Hall (Big East), Texas State (Sun Belt) and UAB (C-USA).
UAB and Duke are the only teams that have previously competed in the event. The Blazers made their only appearance in 2010, finishing 1-1 in the tournament that season. The Green and Gold topped Ball State, 61-56, in the first game before falling to Illinois State, 63-55, in overtime.
The tournament officials released the schedule for the 10-team field on Tuesday, which features schools from eight different conferences. There will be two tournaments. Four teams will compete in the Mayan Tournament, a three-game round robin event.
UAB will compete in the Riviera Tournament, with six teams in a pool where each plays twice. The Blazers are slated to face High Point on Thursday, Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT and NC State on Friday, Nov. 27 at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT.
It will be the third all-time meeting between UAB and High Point and just the second time the Blazers have faced NC State.
The Cancun Challenge is one of the top basketball events held each year and was rated as a top-five preseason tournament by Sports Illustrated in 2014. Teams will stay at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya where the games will be held.
