BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Kansas City product Zack Davis has signed with the UAB baseball program for the 2016 season, head coach Brian Shoop announced on Wednesday.
"We knew we were losing Jeff Schalk who has been a left-handed power bat for us for the last four years," Shoop said. "Thus, a recruiting priority was to find the best high school left-handed power potential bat that was available. We believe we found that in Zack Davis. He is certainly one of the top players and athletes in the Kansas City area and we are thrilled he will be coming across the country to join the UAB baseball family."
Davis, a native of Kearney, Mo., prepped at Kearney HS under head coach Shane Remley. He was named a Preseason Under Armour All-American prior to 2015, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the 2014 Perfect Game WWBA 17U National Championships.
"What makes Zack the perfect fit is that he is an incredible person of the highest character from a truly amazing family," Shoop said. "Zack is exactly the type of young man we try to build our program around. He is also an honors student who will excel in the classroom at UAB."
He was selected to the Kansas City Royals Elite Prospect Team, and hit .410 with four home runs and 35 RBI as a junior. He also went a perfect 5-0 on the mound in 2014 with a 1.61 ERA.
Davis was named all-conference and all-district in football and baseball following his sophomore and junior seasons, and earned multiple Division I offers as a wide receiver. He also played for the Kansas City Barnstormers summer team under Karl Carswell.
"Zack is a great athlete and he is tough," Shoop added."He could have played football in college. We don't know exactly what position he will eventually play, but we know he will hit. We believe that he is a good enough athlete that he will give us options at many positions on the field."
