BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Rising senior Will Cannon won his second-straight state amateur title after earning individual medalist honors at the 99th Alabama State Amateur Championship on Sunday at the Mountain Brook Club.
Cannon, who hails from Hoover, Ala., became the first back-to-back champion since Hunter Hamrick won in 2009 and 2010. He topped the 156-player field with a 21-under 272, finishing four strokes ahead of runner-up Patrick Martin.
The All-Conference USA Second Team selection shot three rounds under par, including a bogey-free first round 65 (-6). Cannon followed with a 68 (-3) in the second round, shot 72 (+1) in the third round and closed out the win with a 67 (-4) in the final 18 holes.
Cannon's win comes just after he finished competing with the UAB men's golf team at the 2015 NCAA Championships. He had a career-year with the Blazers, helping guide UAB to back-to-back team titles in 2014-15. Cannon highlighted the win at The Goodwin after earning co-medalist honors with a school-record tying score of 197.
