BRADENTON, Fla. -- For the second-straight day senior Paul Dunne scored a 3-under 69 to lead the UAB men's golf team during today's morning session. The Blazers shot an 8-over 296 in the third round at The Concession Golf Club.
"The course is just tough," head coach Alan Murray said. "It is so easy to make a bogey out here. All week we probably just made too many higher numbers. Like a lot of teams we had too many bogeys, but we have a really young team. Two freshmen and Will (Cannon) got his first full season in the lineup, so it was a great experience. Paul and Martin really showed their class this week. They just had a little bit more experience than the younger guys."
UAB had a great start to the third round getting to 4-under through the first several holes, but fell victim to the demanding course as the Blazers are currently tied for 19th. The team finished with a 54-hole total 896 (+32) and must wait to see where that falls on the leaderboard. The top 15 teams, along with the top nine individuals not from those teams will continue on to Monday.
Georgia (+1) is leading the field before play was halted due to lighting in the area. The third round will resume at 7 a.m. ET and the fourth round will be 30-45 minutes after any team and/or individual playoffs, but no earlier than 10 a.m. ET.
Dunne continued his impressive play at the nationals with his second-straight 69 (-3) to be second individually at 6-under after 54 holes. Dunne will advance to compete for the individual championship in the final round of stroke-play.
"Paul Dunne has played an ultra-impressive tournament," Murray stated. "He probably made the best par in the of UAB golf today on the seventh hole. He has played really well all week. He has scrambled when he needed to and has hit a ton of good shots so he has a chance to win the tournament tomorrow."
The Greystones, Ireland native has been outstanding over the three days, with 12 birdies, an eagle and just seven bogeys for the tournament. Dunne is currently one stroke behind current leader Bryson Dechambeau (-7) with the remainder of the field still on the course.
It was another strong round for junior Martin Rohwer, who carded a 1-over 73 on the day. He finished with five birdies, but had two bogeys and a double bogey on the second-nine. Rohwer is now 7-over after the three rounds.
Freshman Taylor Eyster was 1-under after the first 11 holes, but had a tough stretch with four bogeys in the final six holes. He still finished with a NCAA career-best round of 75 (+3). Eyster finished the three days 17-over.
"Pleased with Taylor Eyster again today," Murray added. "He leaked a little bit of oil coming in, but he shot 75, which was good. He played very well."
Fellow freshman Lee Hodges also got off to a great start with two birdies through six holes, but struggled on the second-nine to finish with an 82 (+10). Hodges shot 19-over after three rounds. Junior Will Cannon did not start well, but came back to finish his third round with birdies on the last two holes. Cannon a 79 (+7) and finished 23-over.
The tee times for Monday's fourth round will be announced after the conclusion of the third round in the morning. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
The Golf Channel will begin with the Golf Central Pre Game segment set for 11 a.m.-12:30 a.m. ET. Then the final round, individual stroke play will air live from 12:30-4:30 p.m. ET and re-air from 5:30-9:30 p.m. ET.
