BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Following its third 30-win season in the last four years, the UAB baseball team earned the No. 6 seed for the 2015 Conference USA Championship, which will begin Wednesday, May 20, in Hattiesburg, Miss.
"We're looking forward to our first day off tomorrow in as long as I can remember," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We'll practice Monday and Tuesday and head to Hattiesburg. We're excited to be in our tournament and it's a great accomplishment to get there. You have to play well to stay there and we're glad James (Naile) is on the mound for us in game one. We'll be excited and our kids will give their best effort, and if we play well, we will have a legitimate chance."
The Blazers, who are making their 16th appearance in the tournament, will square off with host Southern Miss at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the nightcap at Pete Taylor Park.
The Championship will feature the top eight teams in regular-season league play. The format is two double-elimination brackets with four teams each, with the winners of each bracket meeting in a single-elimination championship game, set for Sunday, May 24 at 12 p.m. CT. That contest will be televised on the CBS Sports Network with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
UAB finished the season at 30-24 overall and 15-15 in league play, claiming nine series wins overall including six in C-USA play. The Blazers' last trip to Hattiesburg was back in early April, when UAB won the first game, before dropping the final two to the Golden Eagles.
The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to face the winner of the (7) Old Dominion vs. (2) Florida Atlantic contest at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
