EL PASO, Texas -- The UAB track and field team's Shelby Barker is in fourth place through the first four events of the heptathlon on the opening day of the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at UTEP's Kidd Field.
"Shelby and Ali Meister got us started in a good way today," UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. "The heptathlon is always an important event for us, Coach Reava Potter has them well-prepared and it showed today.  Shelby set a new personal best in the hurdles and jumped a season best in the high jump.  They are sitting in good scoring positions going into tomorrow."
Barker posted 3,063 points to hoist herself to fourth place in the standings out of 16 competitors. The Roswell, Ga. native opened heptathlon competition with a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (14.54), while placing fourth in Thursday's other track event, the 200-meter dash (25.63).
In Thursday's field events, Barker leapt 1.64m (5-04 1/2) in the high jump to place fourth, while hurling the shot put 10.27m (33-08 1/2) to finish sixth.
Freshman Ali Meister stands in 10th place with 2,805 points after the first day of the heptathlon. Meister's top performance came in the high jump, in which she matched Barker's leap of 1.64m (5-04 1/2) for fourth place in the event.
