BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Head coach Randy Norton announced the signing of Birmingham-local Kara Rawls to a National Letter of Intent on Friday to join the UAB women's basketball team for the 2015-16 season.
"We are excited to welcome Kara Rawls to our UAB family," Norton said. "Kara is a versatile forward with a nose for the basketball. She brings great passion, size and a winning mentality. Most importantly, Kara is a high character young lady that takes great pride in the classroom, she is an outstanding fit for our program."
Rawls hails from Hoover, Ala. where she attended Hoover High School. A 6-foot-0 guard/forward, she played one year at Lawson State Community College. Rawls has won at all levels with two state championships in high school and conference championship at Lawson State.
As a redshirt sophomore, Rawls averaged 11.0 points per game and 12.9 rebounds per contest in 32 games played at Lawson State. She totaled 190 offensive rebounds to rank second in the NJCAA and was fifth with 412 total rebounds.
She guided the Lady Cougars to the 2014-15 NJCAA Alabama Community College Conference Region 22 Conference Tournament title. It was the first time in school history that Lawson State has won the conference title.
A versatile player, Rawls averaged 40.5 percent from the field and 36 percent from behind the 3-point line. She originally signed with Alabama out of high school but sat out her freshman season after an injury and transferred.
The high school standout was ranked the No. 20 wing in her class by ESPN. She helped Hoover High School to back-to-back Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A championships.
Rawls was named to the 2013 AHSAA 6A All-Tournament Team after scoring 11 points in the championship game. She earned a Birmingham News High Five Performer selection after scoring 26 points in a game her senior year. She averaged 7.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.0 block per game as a senior.
She will join the UAB women's basketball program for the 2015-16 season.
