HOOVER, Ala. -- The UAB baseball team fell to Alabama in the second meeting between the two teams this year, 5-1, Tuesday night at the Hoover Met.
"I think Alabama is a really good team and they start running different looks and everyone is a really good arm out of the bullpen," head coach Brian Shoop said. "It's tough to piece some innings together. They've got a veteran, very dangerous lineup to navigate through and we got a lot of freebies ahead of (Will) Haynie, and for the second time in two games we left a ball over the plate and he made us pay with a home run."
That 3-run shot from Haynie gave the Tide an early 3-0 advantage after two, and they never looked back, adding two insurance runs in the fifth. With the loss, UAB drops to 21-14 overall while Alabama improves to 19-16.
UAB's lone run came in the fourth after a Tide error on the pitcher. Esteban Tresgallo drew a leadoff walk, one of his two on the night, and moved up two bases on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff move to first. Matt Morse then singled into right, scoring Tresgallo.
The Blazers' three hits came from Nathan Vincent, Griffin Gum and the RBI knock from Morse. Dylan Munger was tagged with the loss, surrendering his first run of the season. Thomas Lowery, Ryan Ruggles, Gavin Niquette, Stephen Baggett and Adam Lau all got work out of the pen for UAB.
"They played better than we did both games, deserved to win both games and we'll get back to business tomorrow and it'll be very important to have a great weekend in Ruston."
UAB returns to Conference USA play this weekend with a trek west to face the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
