BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team held its annual banquet on Saturday afternoon to celebrate the 2014-15 season.
UAB finished the season 18-13 overall and 11-7 in Conference USA play. It was just the second time since the 1993-94 season that UAB has won 11 or more C-USA games and it was the best record in league play since 2006-07.
The Blazers tied for fourth place in the conference standings after being picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll. It was the sixth consecutive year that UAB has finished with a winning record and second under head coach Randy Norton.
The team capped off a stellar season with an 11-5 record in the final 16 games of the season. That included an eight game home win streak, which is the best since the 2000-01 season.
This season's accomplishments was not limited to those on the court, the Blazers also did a great job in the classroom and getting out in the community. UAB had a team GPA of 3.12 in the Fall, which was the highest since 2006, while also participating in numerous community service project.
The banquet Saturday afternoon honored several of the student-athletes for their outstanding performances this season. UAB alum and former women's basketball player Holly Holland-Berry led the event.
Senior Janae Smith was awarded the team MVP honor. Smith led UAB in six different categories and was named to the All-C-USA First Team. For her efforts she won the awards for highest free throw percentage and rebounds.
Fellow senior Miranda Burroughs picked up the other two awards this year. Burroughs was given the academic award for highest GPA. She was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team earlier this year. She also was presented with the Blazers Award, which is presented to the student-athlete who truly represents what it is to be a Blazer.
Burroughs appeared in and started every game this season. She led C-USA in 3-point FG percentage (.425) as well as 3-point FG made (2.5/game) and set UAB record with a .405 career 3-point field goal percentage in just two seasons. A leader on and off the court, she maintained a high GPA and participated in community service projects all while observing in the classroom to work towards her degree.
The team, coaches and others who were influential to the team attended the ceremony to honor the team for its accomplishments in the 2014-15 season.
