PALO ALTO, Calif. - The UAB men's golf team finished with a school record 817 (-23) to take the title at The Goodwin on Saturday at the Forest Heights Country Club. It is the first team win of the season for the Blazers.
"I couldn't be more proud of the boys," head coach Alan Murray said. "Every really contributed this week so it was a big win for the program. It was an excellent field here, a lot of really good programs so I think it has given the team a glimpse of what is possible."
UAB carded a 276 (-4) in the final round to cap off the record-setting weekend and edged SMU by one stroke in a scorecard playoff. The Blazers' new school record was 10 strokes better the previous of 827 set in 2007. Two members of the UAB lineup finished in the top 10 of the 132-person field.
"It was really tight between us and SMU all day," head coach Alan Murray said. "We were fortunate to win. It was nice to come out on the good side of a tight situation. There have been a couple of times this year that we were a shot away from a really good finish."
Junior Will Cannon tied for first individually to earn co-medalist honors with a 13-under 197. His 54-hole total ties for the UAB record. The Hoover, Ala. native scored a 69 (-1) to cap off a solid weekend. He scored under par in all three rounds on the way to his career-best finish.
"I was really proud of all of the guys, especially Will," Murray stated. "He played solid all weekend. Paul (Dunne) birdied his last hole of the day, which was really big for us. He finished 3-under. Lee Hodges was 1-under, Martin Rohwer was 1-over and Taylor Eyster shot 3-over today."
Freshman Lee Hodges tied for sixth for his third top 10 finish of the season. Hodges finished the tournament with a career-best 203 (-7) after recording a 69 (-1) in the final round. He shot under par in all three rounds on the weekend.
Finishing at 1-over par was junior Martin Rohwer. Rohwer finished in a tie for 24th individually after carding a 71 (+1) in the third round.
Just one stroke behind Rohwer was senior Paul Dunne, who posted a 211 (+1) to tie for 33rd. Dunne led the Blazers with a 3-under 67 in the third round.
Rounding out the UAB lineup was freshman Taylor Eyster. Eyster scored a 73 (+3) on Saturday to conclude with a 217 (+7) over the three days and tie for 73rd.
"Hopefully we can continue this good form going forward," Murray remarked. "We will head to Mississippi State's tournament next week."
UAB will conclude the regular season next week at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point, Miss. The two-day tournament will run April 6-7.
