PALO ALTO, Calif. - Junior Will Cannon fired a career-best 62 (-8) as the UAB men's golf team continued its strong play at The Goodwin with an 11-under 269 in the second round. The Blazers had three players finish under par Friday to propel the team into first place heading into the final round.
"The guys played really well today," head coach Alan Murray said. "Will (Cannon) had an unbelievable round. He finished with six birdies and an eagle. He just hit so many good shots. Lee Hodges played super as well shooting 3-under. Martin finished 1-under and Paul was 1-over. I was really proud of the way they all played."
UAB posted its best score of the season to lead the tournament with a 541 (-19) through the first 36 holes at the Stanford Golf Course. The 269 was the third-best round of the weekend so far. The team finished with 21 birdies.
Cannon's score of 62 tied for a UAB individual school record with Zach Sucher (2008) and Garrett Osborn (2005). After three pars to begin the day he settled in with three-straight birdies followed by an eagle on hole No. 16 to go 5-under. He added three more birdies on the second nine to complete the round 8-under.
The Hoover, Ala. Native is in a tie for first place individually with a 12-under 128. The 36-hole total also ties for a school record with Osborn, who did so in 2005.
Freshman Lee Hodges matched his career-best set in the first round with a 67 (-3) on Friday. Hodges was even heading into the second nine, then recorded three birdies in five holes. He bogeyed on the sixth hole, but followed with a birdie on seven to remain at 3-under. Hodges is in sixth place with a 134 (-6) through the first two rounds.
Junior Martin Rohwer jumped up 15 spots into a tie for 21st with a 139 (-1). Rohwer carded a 1-under 69 in the second round that included five birdies. Senior Paul Dunne shot a 71 (+1) as the fourth score to count for the Blazers.
Dunne and freshman Taylor Eyster are tied for 62nd at 144 (+4) through the first 36 holes. Eyster finished with a 5-over 75 in the second round.
"It is a good field here and we are in great shape after the first two rounds," Murray remarked. "No prize is handed out yet though so we need to do it again tomorrow to give ourselves a good chance at taking home the title."
UAB will conclude the tournament as the 24 teams compete in the third round on Saturday. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.com.
