OXFORD, Miss. - UAB's baseball team swept a doubleheader from 2014 College World Series participant Ole Miss Tuesday, taking wins of 6-1 and 3-1 at Swayze Field.
The Blazers (14-9) attacked the Rebels (13-12) early and took advantage of free base opportunities, totaling eight walks and reaching base three times via hit by pitch. Chase Davis went 4-for-6 on the day, while Tyler Mims totaled three hits and three RBI, including a 2-for-4 game one with a double and home run.
Dylan Munger made his return to the mound in game one, his first appearance since Feb. 24, 2013, and gave way to Sam Kelley and Thomas Lowery, who finished it out for the game one victory.
Adam Lamar started game two and gave up just one run off two hits, before Gavin Niquette and Adam Lau pitched the final 4.1, surrendering just one hit vs. the Rebels.
The doubleheader marked the first meeting between the two clubs since 1999, as the Blazers won their ninth and 10th games vs. Ole Miss.
The Blazers return to the field this weekend with a Conference USA series at Western Kentucky.
Game One Recap
The Blazers took advantage of two mishaps early from Ole Miss starter Sam Smith. Nathan Vincent was hit by a pitch to begin the second, before Tyler Mims sent a double to right-center to plate the first run of the contest. Mitch Williams was also hit by a pitch, before Evan Peterson drove home Mims on a groundout to second.
Adam Lau began UAB's third with a blooper that Ole Miss' left fielder misjudged. Griffin Gum moved him to second, before Jeff Schalk sent a dribbler between the pitcher and first, scoring Lau to make it 3-0.
Mims continued his successful day at the plate, driving a home run - his first of the year - to left field, increasing the Blazers' advantage to 4-0.
The Rebels scored their first run in the fourth after two back-to-back hits with two outs. Sam Kelley exited in that inning after three innings of solid work, allowing just one run off three hits with one strikeout.
UAB put up two insurance runs in the sixth off three-straight free bases. Mims got it all going after reaching on a two-out throwing error. Chase Davis singled through the right side, before Williams walked to setup the bases loaded for Peterson. He also walked, and Adam Smith was hit by a pitch - UAB's third of the game - to score the sixth and final run of the contest.
Game Two Recap
UAB jumped on the Rebels early again in game two, plating two runs in the first off back-to-back RBI singles from Mims and Esteban Tresgallo.
The Rebels answered in their half of the second after two runners were put on base via a hit by pitch and a walk. Following a sacrifice bunt, Henri Lartigue roped a ball on the infield at third, scoring Sikes Orvis to cut the Blazers' lead to 2-1.
The Blazers added another in the fourth when Matt Morse put down a textbook bunt towards first base, sending home Brett Blackwood, who reached earlier on a double that deflected off the wall in left-center.
Adam Lau worked around back-to-back walks in the sixth, before recording a strikeout and inducing a double play - UAB's second of the game and fourth of the day - to strand the Ole Miss runner and maintain the 3-1 lead headed to the seventh.
The Rebels led off the seventh with a single, but after a fly to left, Lau induced another double play - UAB's 25th of the season - to end it and sweep the Rebels.
