STATESBORO, Ga. - The UAB men's golf team took seventh at the 2015 Chris Schenkel Invitational after playing the final two rounds on Saturday due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday. The Blazers finished with a three round total of 848 (-16).
"We were only about four shots from coming in third place," head coach Alan Murray said. "A little bit disappointed with how we finished in terms of our position but the guys played excellent today."
UAB carded the second-best score and third lowest score in the tournament with a 274 (-14) in the second round to jump up to fourth place after beginning in 11th on Saturday. The teams continued with the third round as the Blazers recorded a 4-under 284 to complete the weekend.
"Martin (Rohwer) shot 5-under this morning, Will (Cannon) shot 4-under, Paul (Dunne) shot 3-under and Lee shot 2-under," Murray added. "This afternoon Paul was 2-under, Will and Martin were both 1-under and Taylor Eyster was even. So again, we were in 11th place after the first round, dug ourselves a little bit of a hole. They responded like they did at the Hayt, but if we can start tournaments better we will put ourselves in a much more competition place on the leaderboard."
Across the 54 holes, UAB accumulated five eagles and 58 birdies. Four of the five eagles came on the par-5 seventh hole and junior Martin Rohwer tied for a tournament-leading two eagles.
Senior Paul Dunne led the Blazers with a 6-under 210 for the tournament. Dunne shot under par in all three rounds, including a low of 69 (-3) in the second round. He finished in a tie for 16th overall.
Rohwer jumped into a tie for 24th after carding a 4-under 212. He carded a 67 in the second round and 71 in the third round. Fellow junior Will Cannon also finished with a 212 to tie for 24th. He scored a 68 (-4) in the second round and 71 in the final round.
Freshman Taylor Eyster was consistent through the weekend with a 215 (-1) after carding two rounds at even par and a 71 (-1) in the second round. He tied for 37th overall. Fellow freshman Lee Hodges scored a 70 (-2) in the second round and a 75 (+3) in the third round to finish with a 221 (+5) and tie for 65th.
Sophomore Henry James, who competed as an individual, carded a 225 (+9) to finish tied for 77th. James shot a 79 (+7) in the second round, but responded with a 73 (+1) that included three birdies in the final round.
"The boys played really good today and we were able to move up the leaderboard a little bit," Murray said. "We leave to go to Stanford on Tuesday so looking forward to that."
UAB will return to action next weekend for The Goodwin. The three-day tournament will run Thursday, March 26 through Saturday, March 28 in Palo Alto, Calif.
