STATESBORO, Ga. - The UAB men's golf team is in 11th place after the first round at the Chris Schenkel Invitational. The Blazers finished the first 18 holes 2-over at the Forest Heights Country Club.
"I thought we played better than what we scored," head coach Alan Murray said. "The course is score able. It seems like we had plenty of chances we just didn't hold a lot of spots. When we had a bad shot we would make bogey so we just weren't able to put up the score we wanted."
UAB had two players finish at or under par in the opening round as the team combined for a 290 on Friday. The Blazers accumulated 18 birdies to start the tournament.
Senior Paul Dunne led the Blazers individually with a 1-under 71 through the first round. The Greystones, Ireland native is in a tie for 31st on the individual leaderboard. Freshman Taylor Eyster continued his strong play this spring with an even-par 72 to be tied for 38th.
Junior Will Cannon added a 73 (+1) in the first 18 holes. Cannon is currently tied for 49th. Junior Martin Rohwer's 74 (+2) was the fourth score to count for the Blazers to be tied for 62nd.
Freshman Lee Hodges scored a 75 (+3) and sophomore Henry James competed as an individual with a 1-over 73 in the opening round.
UAB will begin the second round on Saturday with the first tee time set for 8:30 a.m. off the tenth hole.
"Hopefully we can play as well tomorrow but be a little bit more cold-blooded on the green," Murray stated.
