BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior Luiz Felipe Pinto of the UAB men's tennis team was named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced on Monday. The Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes who excel on and off their respective fields of competition.
The Sao Paulo, Brazil native has four doubles and one singles win this spring. He has paired up with Mitchell Martell for doubles wins at the No. 1 spot in matches vs. North Alabama, Auburn, Samford and Belmont.
Pinto claimed the win at the No. 4 singles position in the Blazers' home opener, taking the match, 6-3, 2-6 and 6-1 in a three-setter. Pinto and Jacksonville State's Mathias Chaim played into three sets at the No. 4 position in early February, but the match was halted after scores of 6-3, 6-6 and 2-3.
In the classroom, Pinto has maintained a 3.38 GPA majoring in marketing. He was named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll last year for his academic efforts.
