BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Matthew Calvert will join the UAB baseball program for the 2016 season, head coach Brian Shoop announced on Wednesday.
"Matthew Calvert is a talented left handed pitcher that we are thrilled has chosen to play his college baseball at UAB," Shoop said.
Calvert, a native of Springville, Ala. and senior at Clay-Chalkville High School, was named a 2014 Perfect Game Underclass High School Honorable Mention All-American and was rated the No. 2 LHP in the state of Alabama by Perfect Game.
"Matt has a history of being a strike thrower with great pitch ability," Shoop said. "He can throw multiple pitches for strikes on any count and that plays well at the Division I level."
He was also named to the 2014 Jefferson County Baseball All-Tournament Team, and was named to the 2014 Alabama North-South All-Star Team.
"Matt is an outstanding worker and a great teammate," Shoop said. "Everyone that has played with Matt has loved playing with him and that will fit well into our family approach."
In two years of varsity action with the Cougars, Calvert has tossed 115 innings, compiled a 12-4 record, 1.88 ERA, struck out 108 hitters and tallied two no-hit bids.
"It is great when you can keep a local player at home and we are so pleased to add a pitcher from Clay-Chalkville's outstanding program," Shoop said. "He has tutored under Bubba Roberts at Clay and played with Team Georgia Baseball Academy for Jason Borcherding in the summer. He is will prepared for college baseball. We believe Matt will continue to develop and that his best days are ahead of him. He is a tremendous addition to this recruiting class and we can't wait for Matt to join us on campus next fall."
