PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - After the first round of play on Friday, the UAB men's golf team currently sits in 12th place at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club.
"We just didn't play well enough," head coach Alan Murray said. "The conditions were really tough, very windy. We started on the hard side and no one really was able to get off to a good start."
UAB finished with a first round score of 314 (+26) on the day. North Florida is leading the field at 8-over (296). The Blazers finished with 10 birdies on the day, with three players carding one on the fifth and 18th holes.
Freshman Taylor Eyster led UAB individually with a 5-over 77 and is tied for 30th. The Birmingham, Ala. native finished with three birdies, including one on the 18th hole where three Blazers picked up a birdie on the day.
"Taylor played really well today," Murray stated. "He had a triple bogey on the 17th hole, which ruined a good scorecard. He shot 5-over for the round."
Senior Paul Dunne started the day at 5-over on the first nine holes, but rebounded with a 1-over on the back nine. He carded a 6-over 78 and is tied for 42nd.
Rounding out the scoring for UAB was junior Martin Rohwer, who is tied for 52nd after a 79 (+7), and freshman Lee Hodges, who added an 80 (+8) to be tied for 62nd. Ryan Davies finished with an 82 (+10) and is tied for 73rd.
Junior Will Cannon is competing as an individual. Cannon carded a 7-over 79 with 13 pars on the day to be in a tie for 52nd.
"The golf course really takes no prisoners so we just have to play better tomorrow," Murray remarked. "Looks like we will have similar conditions tomorrow so the guys are just going to do a little bit of work on their game today. All we can do is figure out where we went wrong today and how we can improve on that tomorrow."
