UAB Volleyball Falls at UTSA, 3-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – After dropping the first two sets, the UAB volleyball team topped UTSA in set three, but the Roadrunners battled back to earned the 3-1 match victory Sunday at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (21-7, 12-2 C-USA) stormed to a 4-0 lead in the first set before a kill from junior Amber Treace put the Blazers on the board.
UAB used a 4-1 run to cut the Roadrunner lead to one point, 5-4, before UTSA turned on the offense to top the Blazers, 25-11.
UTSA opened the second set in similar fashion, opening a 7-0 lead over the Blazers (9-21, 1-14 C-USA). The Green and Gold continued to battle and cut the Roadrunners’ lead to two, 17-15, with help of redshirt freshman Zahria Ri’chard’s kill.
The Roadrunners denied a Blazer comeback, tallying five-straight points to win set two, 25-17.
UAB stormed back from intermission in a competitive set three that saw three ties in the opening points.
Junior Gabby Deshotel hammered a kill past the UTSA defense to give UAB an 11-10 advantage that the Blazers would not relinquish. The UAB offense fired on all cylinders to lift the Blazers to a 25-18 victory in the third set to cut UTSA’s lead to 2-1.
Set four was another competitive battle between the squads with only two points separating the teams in the final stanza, 22-20. UAB fought off back-to-back match points before Marijeta Runjic landed a kill to win the final set 25-22.
Deshotel led the Blazers with 20 kills as the junior attacked at a .210 clip. The junior added nine kills and one service ace to the UAB attack.
The outside hitter has now recorded 20 or more kills in back-to-back matches and nine total matches over the season. With 474 kills this season, the junior now ranks 10th for most kills in a single season in program history.
Treace guided the UAB offense, dishing out 27 assists. The setter added two kills, two blocks and six digs for the Blazers.
Junior Emma Schroer topped the UAB defense with 17 digs. The libero has tallied 481 digs this season, the eighth-highest mark in a single season at UAB.
The Blazers return to Bartow Arena on Tuesday for the final non-conference match of the season as UAB hosts Alabama State. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
