BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Colton Schultz of Huntsville, Ala. will join the UAB baseball team for the 2017 season, head coach Brian Shoop announced on Monday. Schultz is the third newcomer to sign with the squad for the 2017 season.
"Colton Schultz is another outstanding player from Huntsville High School where he played under the tutelage of David Sharp who has produced many Division 1 Players including current Blazer Brewer Hicklen," said UAB head coach Brian Shoop. "We are so pleased to add Colton to our Blazer Family for so many reasons. First of all he is an amazing young man. Everyone you talk to says, "Colton Schultz is one of the best young people they have ever met." We have tried to build our program around high character people and Colton is exactly the type of young man we want."
His junior season at Huntsville High School, Schultz was named a First team All-City selection. He hit .342 on the year in addition to six home runs and 29 runs batted in. Schultz showed off his speed by stealing 11 bases and setting the single season triples record that had stood at Huntsville HS for 25 years.
"Obviously he is also a great player, added Shoop. "He is a left-handed hitter with big pop in the bat. He is one of those guys the ball just comes off the bat differently. He can be an impact hitter at this level, and we have no doubt about that. Colton is also a plus runner and plus runners have flourished in our program because we believe so much in the running game."
By virtue of his tremendous play during the 2014-15 season Schultz received the sought-after Quality at Bats award. Also playing for the SoCal National Travel Team he was named to several Perfect Game All-tournament teams.
"Colton is a great athlete, said Shoop. "He can play almost anywhere on the field and his versatility is a great asset for any program to have. He should play shortstop at Huntsville High School this spring. Every infielder that will play for us at UAB this spring was a high school shortstop so where Colton plays at UAB will play out over time. Playing his summer baseball for the SoCal National Travel Team for Coach Scott Luke, coupled with his Huntsville High School career have allowed him to play against the best competition possible in his high school years. He will be prepared to compete at the Division 1 level early in his career.
Off the field Colton has been a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The FCA serves local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference.
