Auburn Outlasts UAB, 85-71

AUBURN, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team fell short Friday as it dropped an 85-71 decision to Auburn in Auburn Arena.
Senior Chelsee Black led the Blazers offensive push. She finished with a team-high 22 points. Brittany Winborne recorded 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.
UAB shot an even 50 percent from the floor and an outstanding 50 percent from beyond the arc in the game's opening 20 minutes. Black was 5-of-9 in the first half for 13 points, including 3-for-6 from three.
Deanna Kuzmanic added two treys for six of her eight first half points. Bianca Dufelmeier also totaled eight points as the Blazers enjoyed a 36-35 lead following a Chelsee Black three at the buzzer to end the first half.
Auburn (1-0) took a 56-49 lead into the final period and scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter in a crucial two-minute stretch, setting the tone for the remainder of the contest.
Deanna Kuzmanic burried her fourth and fifth treys of the night to keep the Blazers close, cutting the Tiger lead to 67-57 with 4:53 left to play in the contest. Despite the valiant UAB comeback attempt Auburn was able to hit key free-throws down the stretch to hold off The Green and Gold.
The Blazers (0-1) finished with a 47.3 shooting percentage (26-for-55) and went 12-for-28 (40 percent) from 3-point range and 14-for-28 (50 percent) from the free throw line. Kuzmanic finished the night with 17 points on 4-of-11 shooting from downtown.
Junior Brandy Montgomery of Auburn had a game-high 24 points, 15 of which came in the second half.
The Blazers hit the road again on Sunday to take on Belmont in Nashville, Tenn. at 4 p.m. CT.
