NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The UAB Blazers fought hard but dropped to 0-2 on the season following its 63-62 loss to Belmont University at the Curb Event Center on Sunday. The Blazers got offense from eight different players with Keonna Farmer leading the way with a game-high 22 points.
The Blazers held a 38-26 lead after the opening two quarters due in part to a 19-0 run spread out between the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter. UAB shot 41.5% (17-of-41) in the opening 20 minutes.
Returning from the locker room, the Blazers looked to continue their dominant first half with aggressive defense. In the early minutes, a Lauren Thompson layup sparked a 14-7 run by the Bruins to pull within five. The Green and Gold were able to weather the storm from Belmont to hold a 52-46 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Despite UAB converting clutch free-throws down the stretch Belmont was lights out from beyond the arc. Kylee Thompson tied the game at 62-62 following an old fashioned three point play with 51 seconds remaining. Lauren Thompson got the ball back and knocked down 1-of-2 from the charity strip with 15 tics on the clock to give BU their first lead of the half.
Bianca Dufelmeier picked up the offensive board off a Farmer missed jumper and put the layup in, but the refs called the shot off. After a lengthy review that had a hostile Belmont crowd on its feet the play stood to give Belmont its second consecutive win to start the season.
Led by Brittany Winborne's double-double, UAB dominated the battle down low with 38 points in the paint to go along with a staggering 19 offensive rebounds.
The Blazers will take the floor next on Nov. 20th vs. South Carolina State at Bartow Arena.
