BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A record 7,500 exuberant fans packed the UAB Campus Green Thursday night to usher in the 2015-16 basketball season with the annual Hoops on the Haasephalt celebration.
The annual event, which is now in its fourth year, serves as a unique way to tip off the preseason.
“I think this was without question the best event and biggest turnout we’ve had since we started doing this,” head coach Jerod Haase said. “I absolutely love the fact that we were in the middle of campus, and I thought everything from the stage to the lights and to the seating was well done.”
Blazer fans were treated to player introductions and team videos to open the event, and Alabama native and WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder served as the special guest.
Sharp-shooters Nick Norton and Deanna Kuzmanic captured the three-point contest title, and senior Robert Brown laid claim to the slam dunk title with an array of spectacular dunks.
In a dance-off featuring the best dancers from both teams, a crowd vote decided by noise determined the men’s team to be the slightest of winners.
The event started with a splash when Chirag Patel and Allie David were announced as Mr. and Miss. UAB.
