BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's golf team fired a 1-under, 279 to finish sixth at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Old Overton Country Club.
"I'm disappointed with how we played the back nine," head coach Alan Murray said following the round. "Fifth was as good as we could have expected to finish as we were too far back of the top four teams. So, to play the front nine as well as we did today and finish as badly as we did is disappointing."
Sophomore Lee Hodges led the way for the Green and Gold, turning in the low score of the day at 3-under, 67. The Elkmont, Ala. native strung together six birdies, including four on the front nine, to jump 13 spots and finish T-16th at 1-over, 211 overall.
Both Tim Harry and Will Cannon rounded out play at 2-over, 212, tying for 20th. Harry put away two bogeys on the front nine with an eagle at the sixth hole, before shooting par on seven of his last nine to round out the day at even-par, 70.
Cannon had an impressive front nine with three birdies through his first eight holes, before dropping four bogeys through the back nine to finish the day 2-over, 72.
After shooting 1-under, 69, in Monday's second round, sophomore Taylor Eyster carded three birdies and three bogeys Tuesday to finish the round at even-par, 70, and the tournament tied for 28th at 3-over, 213.
Senior Martin Rohwer rounded out the field at 17-over, 227 overall after shooting 7-over, 77 in his final round.
"We have a good team, but like I told the boys, we throw away too many cheap shots and our putting was poor," Murray added. "We cannon expect to compete with the best teams in the country not putting well and shooting ourselves in the foot. The team score improved each round, so that was encouraging."
