BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Breann Hedin scored two goals to lead Southern Miss to a 3-2 victory over the UAB women's soccer team Friday night in the inaugural match from BBVA Compass Field.
Somer Jones put Southern Miss head less than two minutes into the contest when she struck for her third goal of the season off a feed from Mary Kate Smith.
UAB senior Paige Hanks pulled the Blazers even with a goal just seconds after Jones gave the Golden Eagles the lead.
Under a minute later senior Paige Hanks netted the equalizer to tie the game at 1-1.
"Paige was awesome tonight," UAB head coach Harold Warren said. "The goals she scored were fantastic, and that's just the ability she's always had. She ended her college career very well."
Consecutive goals from Southern Miss forward Breann Hedin put the Eagles ahead 3-1 early in the second half, but Hanks cut the deficit to one goal with a strike in 65th minute following a pass from Sarah Morris.
Senior goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez tallied five saves in the match, ending her career as a Blazer with 170 saves, fifth-best in program history.
"Obviously it's tough to lose," Warren added. "I thought we played well, but we needed to be better defensively. This shows we are a good soccer team. We just need to fix some things and we'll be good. The toughest part of the night was essentially losing five daughters. This was my first recruiting class and I'll really miss these young ladies."
