Blazers Fall to UTSA in Three Sets, 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a match that featured 16 ties and six lead changes, the UAB volleyball team was edged out by UTSA, 3-0, Friday evening in Bartow Arena.
UTSA opened the match with the first point off an attacking error by junior Amy Hunter. The Blazers (7-12, 0-5 C-USA) battled to tie the game three times before the Roadrunners (12-5, 3-0 C-USA) opened a five-point lead, 17-19
UAB would cut the UTSA lead to 19-18 off a service ace from junior Gabby Deshotel, but the Roadrunner offense fired back to win the first set, 25-19.
The Blazers took their first lead of the match in set two with back-to-back kills from Hunter and freshman Jillian Tinglin to open the set, 2-1. The two squads battled neck-to-neck in the early stages of the match with 10 total ties and six lead changes.
UAB could not outlast the UTSA attack as the Roadrunners opened a 7-0 run at the midway point and won set two, 25-17, to put UTSA up, 2-0, at the break.
UTSA led by as much as six in the early stages of the third set, but the Blazers went on two separate runs to close the gap, 20-15, before the Roadrunners tallied five-straight points to win the set, 25-16.
Deshotel led the Blazers, totaling 17 of the Blazers 38 points. The outside hitter garnered 15 kills for a team-high .257 clip. The junior also tallied two service aces and eight digs in the match.
Dajana Boskovic totaled 11 kills and a .423 clip for the Roadrunners. UTSA closed the match with a team attacking percentage of .344 with 37 kills.
UAB will close its eight-game home stand on Sunday as the Blazers host Southern Miss to kick off homecoming festivities. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
