BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Nick Norton of the UAB men’s basketball team was named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced on Monday. The Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes who excel on and off their respective fields of competition.
The Bloomington, Ill. native has been one of UAB’s most consistent players as of late and was recently named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week. He scored a career-high 26 points against Charlotte last week, the most by a Blazer freshman in a game since Mo Finley scored 32 vs. Fresno State in 1999. In two games last week, Norton hit 60 percent (9-of-15) of his shots, including an 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) mark from 3-point range.
In 17 starts this season, Norton is averaging 7.5 points per game and has been clutch from the free throw line with an 86.8 percent mark. He also ranks third in C-USA in assist/turnover ratio with a 2.21 ratio.
In the classroom, Norton has maintained a 3.84 GPA majoring in kinesiology in his first season balancing academics and athletics for the Blazers. Norton and the men’s basketball team return to the court on Thursday for a C-USA road matchup at UTEP.
