BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Four Blazers concluded action at the 2015 Samford Heptathlon/Pentathlon on Wednesday, led by senior Shelby Barker's fifth place finish.
"It was a good start, but there is still work to do in order to reach the goals that we have set for this season," assistant track and field coach Reava Potter said. "All of the girls were able to achieve some personal bests in various events throughout the pentathlon."
Barker totaled 3,461 points to lead the Blazer foursome. She ran the 60-meter hurdle in 9.24, finished with a 1.59m high jump, 10.14m shot put, 4.99m long jump and 2:23.20 time in the 800-meter.
Freshman Ali Meister claimed a 10th-place result in her young UAB career, totaling 2,952 points in the event. She completed the 60-meter hurdle in 9.43 seconds, maxed out at 1.47m in the high jump, 8.68m in the shot put, 5.06m in the long jump, and ran a 2:44.48 in the 800-meter run.
Fellow freshman Jimmeshia Wilder rounded out UAB's finishers in the event with a 13th-place result, as Hannah Hensley did not finish for the Blazers.
"Overall we came out and competed and did well," Potter said. "Now it's time to sharpen up where we lack to be able to execute well at conference."
As a team, UAB will be back in action this weekend as the Blazers host the Vulcan Invite Friday and Green and Gold Invite Saturday.
