BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s soccer team opened Conference USA play with a 5-0 victory over UTSA on Sept. 26 at West Campus Field. Senior midfielder Johanna Liney tallied two goals and has found the back of the net four times in the past two outings.
“It was a great win and we knew that both UTSA and UTEP are very good teams,” said coach Harold Warren. “The score is not indicative of who UTSA is. They are a good team and well coached. It was a battle on both sides but we just finished. The girls’ confidence that we can score goals and make great runs is high right now.”
Sophomore forward Kimberly Fincher notched the game’s first score, her first of the year, with a header over the Roadrunners’ (4-4-1, 0-1 C-USA) Emma Makela, who came off her line to challenge the ball played in by senior defender Mary Catherine-Combs. Three minutes later, Liney netted her fifth goal of the season by maneuvering around the challenging keeper and finding the net from the top of box.
“Johanna (Liney) is doing what Johanna has always been able to do,” Warren said. “She has always been an excellent goal scorer, but now she is putting in maximum effort for the team.”
Over midway through the second half, Fincher gave the Blazers (4-5-0, 1-0 C-USA) a 3-0 advantage with a second goal. She took a ball from sophomore forward Kasey Johnson who made a run down the sideline before crossing the ball to the far post.
Johnson assisted on two more goals before the match was done, setting up Liney for her second goal of the match and freshman defender Amy Brewer for her career-first goal and points in the Green and Gold.
Junior goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez made 11 saves, bringing her season total to 55. Jimenez led all keepers in C-USA coming into the match in total saves.
UTSA outshot UAB, 19-17, but the Blazers were able to put two more shots on frame.
UAB takes the field again on Sunday, Sept. 28, against UTEP (7-3-1, 1-0 C-USA) at noon at West Campus Field. The Miners are coming off a 1-0 victory in overtime against Middle Tennessee.
