TOLEDO, Ohio – The UAB men’s golf team finished in third place at the Inverness Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Inverness Club. The Blazers recorded an 884 (+32) for the three-round event in Toledo, Ohio.
UAB finished 16 strokes behind Inverness Intercollegiate team champion East Tennessee State and was just four back of runner-up South Florida. It was the Blazers’ highest finish as a team so far this season.
“There were a lot of positives for us again today,” head coach Alan Murray said. “We were just a little too far back of the two teams ahead of us. We gave them too much of a head start to be able to catch up in the final round.”
Freshman Lee Hodges earned the best finish of his young career, as the individual runner-up after recording a 216 (+3) for the tournament. Hodges was fifth heading into the final round and used a 2-under back nine to propel him into second, carding a 72 (+1) today.
“Lee Hodges was ultra impressive,” Murray stated. “He finished second individually. Taylor McCullum played a fantastic round as well, so our two freshmen had big rounds for us today. They got off to kind of a slow start, but Taylor finished with a 73 and Lee shot a 72. Martin Rohwer had a great round. He finished inside the top-10.”
Rohwer tied for fourth after leading the Blazers with an even-par 71 in the final round. He finished with a three-round total of 281 (+5) in the tournament and had just one round over-par.
McCullum added a 2-over 73 in the final round of his first collegiate tournament. He finished with four birdies, eight pars and six bogeys in the round. His 232 (+19) 54-hole total landed him t-33rd on the leaderboard.
Senior Paul Dunne earned a top-15 finish in his first tournament of the season, finishing tied for 13th with a 222 (+9) total. Dunne carded a 77 (+6) for the final round. Junior Will Cannon closed out his final round with an eagle on the 18th to score an 82 (+11). He totaled a 238 (+25) for the tournament.
“There were a lot of positives so that is really encouraging and now we get ready for our tournament at Shoal Creek next week,” Murray stated.
UAB will return to Alabama for its home tournament with 2014 Shoal Creek Invitational, hosted by Graeme McDowell. The tournament will be held Monday, Sept. 29 through Tuesday, Sept. 30 at Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.
