Volleyball Drops 3-0 Match To Ohio State

MIAMI, Ohio – The UAB volleyball team fell to Ohio State, 3-0, on Friday afternoon in its first match of the Miami (OH) Invitational in Miami, Ohio. The Blazers will return to play Miami (OH) at 11 a.m. CT and IUPUI at 3:30 p.m. CT.
UAB (3-9) finished with a .193 hitting percentage, while Ohio State (7-3) hit a clip of .286 in the match. Junior Sydney Nelson and sophomore Gabby Deshotel each led the Blazers with eight kills. Erin Sekinger recorded 11 kills to lead the Buckeyes.
The Blazers were trailing early in the first set, but fought back to cut Ohio State’s lead to three at 13-10. The Buckeyes countered with a run to stretch back out of reach and held on to take the set, 25-17.
It was a battle in the second set as the teams were tied 12 times. The teams were knotted up at 7-7 when Ohio State used a run to push its lead to 11-7 and force a UAB timeout. Out of the timeout, the Blazers recorded two-straight points on kills by Nelson.
UAB continued to cut the Buckeyes’ lead and eventually tied it up at 16-16. From there, the teams traded points and the lead until the 20-20 mark when Ohio State was able to put together little run and win the set, 25-22.
In the third set, the Blazers struggled early as Ohio State jumped out to a 12-6 lead. Once again, UAB climbed its way back into the set to cut the lead to four at 20-16. However, a 5-1 run by the Buckeyes would close out the set, 25-17.
The Blazers finished with 30 kills on the afternoon. Along with Nelson and Deshotel, senior Sara Rishell added five kills on a team-best .417 hitting percentage. Sophomore Amber Treace dished out 24 assists and added five digs. Freshman Alexis Howell led the defensive effort with six digs.
UAB will continue play in the Miami (OH) Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20. The Blazers will take on Miami (OH) at 11 a.m. CT and IUPUI at 3:30 p.m. CT.
