KARUIZAWA, Japan - Senior Paul Dunne competed for his home country of Ireland at the 2014 World Amateur Team Championships (WATC) Sept. 9-13 at Karuizawa 72 Golf East in Japan. Dunne helped Ireland to an 11th-place finish and he tied-22nd individually.
The WATC consisted of four rounds of play on two different courses as teams played for the Eisenhower Trophy. There were 55 countries that traveled to Japan to compete in this biennial tournament. Three players were selected to represent each country and the two lowest scores from each team scored for the round.
Dunne finished the tournament with a four-round total of 275 (-11). He putted for 16 birdies, 51 pars and just five bogeys across the four days.
In the first round, Dunne finished with a score of 70 (-2) on the Iriyama Course, and then followed that with a 70 (-1) on the Oshitate Course in the second round.
He really hit his stride in the third and fourth rounds, when his scores counted towards Ireland's total on both days. Dunne scored a 68 (-3) in the third round on the Oshitate Course with five birdies on the day.
Dunne capped off the tournament with his best round, carding a 67 (-5) on the Iriyama Course. He tallied six birdies and just one bogey in the fourth and final round to finish tied-22nd individually out of 200 amateurs.
As a team, Ireland finished 11th overall with a total score of 545 (-27). It was 11-shots off the winner, as the United States won the Eisenhower Trophy with a 534 (-38).
The WATC concluded a busy summer for Dunne, which included a win with Team Europe in the 2014 Palmer Cup and an appearance at the 2014 Open Championship after earning individual medalist honors at the Woburn final qualifying.
Dunne will return to compete with the UAB men's golf team, who will be back in action Monday, Sept 22-23 for the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio.
