Davies Finishes Second At Welsh Amateur

BRIDGEND, Wales – Rising redshirt junior Ryan Davies of the UAB men’s golf team finished in second place at the 2014 Welsh Amateur Championship on Friday at the Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club.
Davies advanced to Friday’s final match after defeating Ben Westgate 1 up in the semifinals, winning the decisive 18th hole. Davies suffered a 7 & 5 setback in the 36-hole final to Evan Griffith.
The Aberdare, Wales native squeaked out a 1 up victory in his first match against Matthew Owain Harris on Tuesday. Davies followed that up with a 7 & 6 win against Rhvs Evans to advance to the third round.
On Wednesday, Davies defeated Thomas Flint 1 up and then scored a 3 & 2 victory against Richard Hooper to advance to the quarterfinals. In Thursday’s quarterfinal, Davies recorded a 4 & 3 win, pushing him into the semifinals.
Davies and the 2014-15 UAB men’s golf team have enjoyed their fair share of success this summer. Rising senior Paul Dunne participated in The 2014 Open Championship, rising junior Martin Rohwer earned reserve medalist honors at the 2014 East of Scotland Open, and classmate Will Cannon won the 2014 Alabama State Amateur.
The UAB men’s golf team will open its season on Sept. 7 at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minn. The University of Minnesota’s home tournament will run two days.
