BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard of the UAB baseball team was named the Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Mallard became the first pitcher to earn C-USA Pitcher of the Week four times in a single season since 2006 Dick Howser Trophy winner Brad Lincoln of Houston did so.
Mallard tossed a complete game two-hit shutout on Friday, May 9 against Tulane. It marked his second complete game shutout and third shutout he has been a part of in 2014. He did not allow a base runner until the fifth inning, via a walk, and gave up singles in the seventh and ninth innings. The Cullman, Ala. native struck out five, walked two, and hit one batter on the night.
The senior right-handed pitcher owns a 9-1 record and 1.12 ERA on the year. Mallard currently leads the league in ERA and opposing batting average (.178). His nine victories in a single season rank second in program history, as well.
The UAB baseball team is back in action on Tuesday night in a mid-week tilt at Auburn. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
