BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior defender Ian Michalak of the UAB men's soccer team earned Capital One Academic All-America honors for the second year in a row, CoSIDA announced on Tuesday.
After becoming just the second player in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors last year as a second team honoree, Michalak was named to the third team this season. He also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 Team honors again this season and was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team for the second-straight year.
The Collierville, Tenn. native played in 13 games for the Blazers this season, helping the squad advance to its third NCAA Championship in four years. He took three shots as a defender for one on target in his senior campaign.
Michalak was part of the 2014 defense that tallied four shutouts and held opponents to one goal or less in 14 different contests. He finished his career with 36 games played, 498 minutes, one goal and nine shots.
In the classroom, Michalak has maintained a 3.92 GPA majoring in neuroscience. He has earned C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll honors every year while in Birmingham and has also earned the league's Academic Medal each year while with the Green and Gold.
Michalak and the UAB men's soccer team concluded the 2014 season with an 11-7-2 overall record. The Blazers were ranked as high No. 18 nationally this year and made their eighth overall NCAA Championship appearance.
