Student-Athlete Of The Week: Jake Ganus

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior football linebacker Jake Ganus was named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced on Friday. The Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes who excel on and off their respective fields of competition.
The Chelsea, Ala. native has been a leader on and off the field for three seasons for the Blazers, leading the team in tackles as a junior and sophomore.
He has collected more than 200 tackles in his career and has a team-leading 54 this season. He has hit opponents 13 times for a loss thus far, which ranks No. 30 in the NCAA and third in Conference USA, and has tallied five sacks. He recently scored the first touchdown of his career in a 56-yard fumble recovery return against Louisiana Tech a week ago.
Ganus also led the 2013 squad defensively, totaling 93 tackles, eight for loss and one forced fumble. As a freshman in 2012, he was fourth on the team with 63 tackles, 3.5 for loss, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Off the field, Ganus has maintained a 3.45 GPA majoring in business. He has earned Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll accolades every year while at UAB and earned the league’s Academic Medal as a freshman.
Ganus and the Blazers return to action next Saturday, Nov. 22 against Marshall in the home finale.
