BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Carter Pharis of Birmingham, Ala. will join the UAB baseball team for the 2016 season, head coach Brian Shoop announced on Wednesday.
"We first met Carter when he attended our summer camp with his Hewitt-Trussville baseball team," Shoop said. "We immediately loved him as a player, then a sophomore shortstop at Hewitt-Trussville High School. The more we got to know Carter, we grew quickly to believe that he and UAB baseball would be a great match."
Pharis was named an Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) Class 6A All-State Honorable Mention selection in 2014. He also garnered First-Team Birmingham News All-Metro honors and was named the 2014 Birmingham News North/East Player of the Year.
"Carter has been coached by former UAB player Jeff Mauldin at Trussville, truly one of the outstanding coaches in our state, so he is as prepared for college baseball as any young man can be," Shoop added.
As a junior, Pharis hit .372 for the Huskies, totaling 33 RBI, 10 doubles and two home runs. He set Hewitt-Trussville single-season records in runs scored (49), walks (38), stolen bases (33) and assists (81). He also helped the squad to claim back-to-back Area 12 Championships, and helped lead the team to a 31-10 record, setting the single-season school record with 28 regular season wins.
"In the summer he has played with Excel Baseball under the leadership of Steve Gendron, Josh Beshears and Matthew Maniscalco, so he has played against the best competition available, both in high school and in the summer, and for some of the best coaches in the business," Shoop said. "Because he has played at the highest level of competition available, we expect him to transition quickly to Division I baseball."
Pharis was a three-year letterman in basketball for Hewitt-Trussville and shared the backcourt with current UAB men's basketball guard Jarvis Calhoun.
Off the field, Pharis is a standout in the classroom. He has a 3.83 GPA and ranks in the top-50 of his class of more than 300 students.
"Carter is a gifted and committed student and is a member of the National Honor Society," Shoop said. "He will continue our tradition of excellence in the classroom. Best of all, Carter's character is off the charts. He is everything you want in a student-athlete, and UAB is a better school and our baseball program is better with Carter Pharis a part of it. We could not be more pleased to have Carter joining our baseball family."
