BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s soccer team returns to West Campus Field to face FIU on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. and Florida Atlantic, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. The Blazers are currently third in Conference USA, posting a mark of 2-1-1.
UAB comes off a 0-1-1 road trip, including its first conference loss. At Southern Miss on Oct. 3, the Blazers struck first with sophomore forward Kimberly Fincher’s third goal of the season. Trailing 1-0, the Golden Eagles snapped UAB’s 363:24-minute shutout streak with an equalizer in the 87th minute. No decider could be tallied, giving each program a point in the C-USA standings. The Blazers suffered their first conference loss, 2-1, at Louisiana Tech last Sunday. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead, netting both goals just minutes out of halftime. Fincher responded for UAB with a goal in the 52nd, but LA Tech held on for the victory.
FIU most recently tied FAU on Oct. 5, 0-0. The Panthers are 6-5-1 this season and have recorded one conference victory (vs. Old Dominion, 2-1, Sept. 26). FIU is led by Chelsea Leiva’s seven goals. Only four different Panthers account for the team’s 12 goals this season. In frame, Nevena Stojakovic has played every match, turning aside 31 shots and posting six shutouts.
FAU has claimed one conference victory this season, defeating Charlotte, 1-0, on Sept. 26 in its C-USA opener. Claire Emslie leads the Owls with three goals and two assists in their six wins. Hildur Hauksdottir has found the back of the net on three occasions as well. Three different FIU players have accounted for more than one goal this year. In goal, Sydney Drinkwater has made 54 saves and is allowing less than one goal per game (0.93).

UAB Notes
Friday night’s match against FIU is UAB’s annual Kicking for a Cure game. There will be $2 raffles for gift cards and T-shirts for a minimum donation of $5. All proceeds will benefit the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
UAB opened its home schedule against Chattanooga on Sept. 19 with a dominating 7-0 performance. The seven-goal performance was the most put up by the Blazers since downing DePaul 7-2 on Oct. 29, 2004. The seven-goal margin was the highest since the 2004 season when UAB defeated Houston, 8-0.
The Blazers opened C-USA play at home against UTSA on Sept. 26, downing the Roadrunners, 5-0. On Sept. 28, UAB moved to 3-0 at home and 2-0 in the conference for the first time since 2006 with a 2-0 victory against UTEP.
UAB is outscoring its opponents 14-0 while playing at West Campus Field.
Sophomore forward Kimberly Fincher has netted four goals in as many matches. Fincher tallied the Blazers only two goals last weekend at Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech. Through 12 matches, she is one goal shy of matching her output from a year ago (5 goals).
