BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's golf team finished fourth at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate with a three-round total of 852 (+12). The Blazers recorded a 283 (+3) in the final round on Tuesday.
"The team played well today," head coach Alan Murray said. "We leaked a little bit of oil coming in, but the back nine here is tough. Holes 17 and 18 are real brutal to finish. We could have finished third, but UNLV just edged us down the last few holes. Overall I was very pleased."
UAB finished just three strokes behind third place UNLV (849). Alabama won the team title for the third consecutive year, finishing with an 830 (-10) and Florida State was second with an 843 (+3).
The Blazers had three players finish at or under par for the third round. Junior Martin Rohwer led with a 1-under 69. Rohwer had a great start to the round with three birdies in the first six holes. He finished the tournament tied for eighth (70-71-69=210).
"Martin had a great score, he made the bogey of a lifetime on the last hole. As coach Kaufman said, it looked like he was going to make a 12 but somehow he chipped in for bogey. That helped us to beat Arkansas by a shot and they are a good team."
Senior Paul Dunne and freshman Lee Hodges were both even par on the final 18 holes. Dunne finished the tournament 2-over (71-71-70=212) to tie for 13th place. Hodges also had a solid start to the third round with three birdies on the front nine. He finished in a tie for 15th at 3-over (73-70-70=213).
"Paul played really steady and solid as always and Lee Hodges played well too," Murray remarked. "Will played a really great round, I don't think 4-over is a real accurate representation of how he played. I probably saw him play the most today, just couldn't get the ball in the hole. Really proud of how he played from tee to green all day."
Junior Will Cannon carded a 74 (+4) in the final round to total 221 (+11) for the tournament. He finished tied for 38th along with redshirt freshman Taylor McCullum. McCullum shot a 76 (+6) in the final round to finish at 221 (75-70-76).
"As we keep saying, we will get better as the year goes on," Murray stated. "This is all part of the learning curve for these guys. It is better to learn our lessons now in the early part of the season than regionals later in the spring."
UAB will conclude its fall season next week at the Sagamore Preview in Noblesville, Ind. The tournament will run from Monday, Oct. 13 through Tuesday, Oct. 14.
