BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s soccer team travels to Southern Miss on Friday, Oct. 3, to take on the Golden Eagles at 4 p.m. and then to Louisiana Tech on Sunday, Oct. 5, for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Blazers enter the weekend 2-0 in Conference USA and holding opponents scoreless for the last 276:26 minutes of play.
UAB has started Conference USA play 2-0 for the first time since 2006 after defeating UTSA, 5-0, on Sept. 26 and UTEP, 2-0, on Sept. 28. The Blazers are now 3-0 at West Campus Field and riding a three-game unbeaten streak. Junior goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez turned away 18 shots last weekend, including 11 against UTSA and leads all keepers in the conference with 62 stops this season.
Three different UAB players notched multi-goal games last weekend. Senior Johanna Liney and sophomore Kimberly Fincher each netted two goals against the Roadrunners, while sophomore Morgan Key-Adams tallied two goals against the Miners. Over the past three matches, the Blazers are outscoring their opponents 14-0.
Southern Miss started conference play with a pair of losses at Rice, 4-0, and at North Texas, 4-0. The Golden Eagles came into conference play on a three-game win streak and are 5-6-0 overall this season. Karren Torres leads Southern Miss with four goals, while Breann Hedin has recorded four assists and two goals of her own. In goal, Shelby Presnell has seen the most action with seven games played. Presnell is 3-4 and allowing 2.39 goals per game.
Louisiana Tech remains winless in conference play after dropping road matches at North Texas, 1-0, and at Rice, 6-0. The Bulldogs are 8-3-1 on the year. Taylor Dennis and Kathryn Sloan lead Louisiana Tech with eight and seven goals a piece. Sixteen different Bulldogs have accounted for the team’s 44 goals.

Through 10 matches, 13 different Blazers have accounted for the squad’s 57 points (21 goals, 15 assists). Johanna Liney leads the way with six goals and 14 points (6 goals, 2 assists). Paige Hanks is second on the team with seven points (2 goals, 3 assists). Kasey Johnson leads the Blazers with four assists. Others to find the back of the net this season include: Rachel Green (2), Sarah Morris (2), Kasey Johnson (1), Megan Collins (1), Morgan Key-Adams (3), Kimberly Fincher (2), Amy Brewer (1) and Sharon Osterbind (1).
In the past three consecutive shutouts, Jimenez has turned away 21 shots, including 11 against UTSA on Sept. 26.
Against UTEP on Sept. 28, UAB blocked 9 of 18 shots. Jimenez stopped all seven that found their way on frame.
The last time UAB posted three consecutive shutouts was in 2009. The Blazers started the season 6-0, including holding their first three opponents scoreless before allowing two goals against Clemson on Aug. 30, 2009. UAB went 273:44 minutes without surrendering a goal.
276:26 is the longest amount of time without surrendering a goal the Blazers have gone since 2007 when UAB held its opponents scoreless for 374:16 minutes.
Already with six goals to her name in 2014, Liney has matched the highest output in a single season of her career. She scored six goals in 2012 as a sophomore.
The Series Against USM and LA Tech
UAB is 11-4-0 all-time against Southern Miss dating back to 1998. In the last meeting, the Blazers downed the Golden Eagles, 1-0, in Birmingham, Ala., on Sept. 21, 2012. UAB and Louisiana Tech have never met on the pitch.
