Volleyball Downs Marshall 3-1 Friday

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Seven different players recorded kills to help the UAB volleyball team top Marshall, 3-1, on the road Friday night. The Blazers won their second-straight match in Conference USA play.
UAB improved to 6-17 overall and 3-5 in league play with the win, while Marshall fell to 9-13 and 3-4 in conference. It was the second consecutive match that the Blazers outhit their opponent, recording a .252 attack percentage to the Thundering Herd's .069 clip.
Sophomore Gabby Deshotel led the Blazers with 15 kills and senior Sara Rishell added 11 on the night. Sophomore Amber Treace continued her strong play at setter, finishing with her second double-double of the year. She dished out 43 helpers and recorded 11 digs, while adding four kills.
The Blazers had another solid night at the net, finishing with 11.0 blocks as a team. Rishell led the charge with seven and Treace had five blocks. Sophomore Emma Schroer led UAB with 14 digs and senior Bethanie Thomas had 10.
UAB opened the match with a 25-17 win in the first set. The teams were tied at 11-11, but a 4-0 Blazer run gave them the advantage they needed to hold on and lead the match 1-0.
Marshall countered with a 25-23 win in the second set to tie the match up at one set apiece heading into the break. The teams remained close for much of the third set, but another run for UAB put the team up 21-14. The Blazers capped off the set with a kill by Rishell to win 25-17.
The momentum continued as UAB used a 9-1 run to take the lead 14-7 in the fourth set. The Blazers scored the final three points of the set to close out the 25-17 win and secure the match.
UAB will have Sunday off before it continues play on the road at Southern Miss and Rice. The Blazers will take on the Golden Eagles Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. CT and then play the Owls on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. CT.
