NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - Junior Will Cannon fired a 2-over 146 through the first two rounds to lead the UAB men's golf team at the Sagamore Fall Preview on Monday. The Blazers are currently fourth heading into the final round Tuesday.
"We had a bad first round but the boys bounced back well in the second round," head coach Alan Murray said. "We were 11-over this morning and then shot 4-over this afternoon so we are headed in the right direction."
UAB shot a 292 (+4) in the second round, which tied for the second lowest score for the round, to move up to fourth place after the first day. The Blazers carded a 591 (+15) through the first 36 holes after starting the day with an 11-over (299) in the first round.
"The weather has been tough all day," Murray stated. "It was raining most of the morning but improved this afternoon. The course hasn't been able to recover the way they would have wanted with bad weather here recently so the conditions have been tough."
Three Blazers are within one stroke of each other. Cannon paced the Blazers in the first round with an even par 72 and followed with a 74 (+2) to total 146 and rank 11th individually. Fellow junior Martin Rohwer shot 4-over in the first, but came back for a one-under 71 to finish with a 147 (+3) in a tie for 12th.
"Will Cannon played really well to lead us," Murray remarked. "Then Martin shot one-under this afternoon, which was a great round."
Senior Paul Dunne is one stroke behind Rohwer with a 148 (+4) and is tied for 18th. Dunne recorded an even par 72 after scoring an eagle and a birdie in his final nine holes for the second round.
Freshman Taylor Eyster made his collegiate debut in the lineup, currently tied for 26th with a 150 (+6). Eyster shot a 75 (+3) in both rounds, which included five birdies in the first round.
"The pleasing thing in the first round was Taylor Eyster, who was playing in his first college tournament," Murray remarked. "He shot 3-over 75 and that included a quintuple bogey, which you do that once every five years so that was really unfortunate. Really proud of the way he played, he counted both rounds so he had a really good start."
Fellow freshman Lee Hodges totaled a 155 (+11) through the first two rounds. He carded a 79 (+7) in the first round and a 76 (+4) in the second.
The Blazers will be back on the course Tuesday for the final round if weather permits. UAB is set to tee off beginning at 9:10 a.m. ET from the first tee.
"We just need to play well tomorrow," Murray said. "I like to think we are better than what we played so far so now it is up to us to show it tomorrow."
