BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB women’s soccer team remained knotted in a scoreless tie with Florida Atlantic on Sunday at West Campus Field. Junior goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez turned away eight shots in the match.
“We are accustomed to playing Friday-Sunday games, but we started slow just having a single, Sunday game weekend,” said head coach Harold Warren. “We weren’t in any danger during the game, but we started slow and that is never a good thing. In the second half we started picking it up, but they are a good team and do not give up many goals. They are tough to break down.”
The Blazers (5-6-2, 2-1-2 C-USA) fired 13 shots, with five finding their way on frame. The Owls’ (6-6-3, 1-2-2 C-USA) outshot UAB, tallying 15 attempts with eight on goal.
The Blazers ramped up the pressure during the first overtime, forcing FAU’s goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater to make three stops in the 10-minute period.
“We had some opportunities, but it was a tough game all around for both teams,” Warren said. “We knew it was going to be that way. I know (coach) Patrick (Baker) very well, and he is a very good tactician and a good coach, so it was what we expected. We obviously still wanted the win and the three points, though.”
Jimenez came up with several crucial saves throughout the contest, including coming off her line with seconds remaining in the second overtime to force the Owls’ Olivia Mbala to fire a shot off the far post.
“Angie was Angie,” said Warren. “She makes the saves and we try to take care of the goals, but she does her job. That is what we expect and it’s what happens.”
With the draw, UAB remains unbeaten at West Campus Field this season and has yet to surrender a goal while playing at home.
The Blazers travel to Marshall on Friday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. and to Western Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m.
