UAB Leads After Two Rounds At Shoal Creek

Results Through Round Two
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s golf team used a record-setting second round to take a two-stroke lead heading into the third and final round of the 2013 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by Graeme McDowell, on Monday at Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club. UAB recorded a second-round 274 (-15) to propel it into first place at its annual home tournament.
“They shot a great number,” head coach Alan Murray stated. “15-under par is an excellent score on any course for a college team, especially Shoal Creek. I am really proud of them.”
It was a record setting day at Shoal Creek, with individual and team records being broken. Missouri’s Ryan Zech matched the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate 18-hole record of 67 (-5) in the first round. In the second round, Liberty’s Chase Marinell, Ole Miss’ Blake Morris, and UAB’s Wilson McDonald all were five-under par. Morris broke the 36-hole mark by three strokes with a 135 (-9) through two rounds, which puts him in first place.
Memphis and Ole Miss both set first-round records with each team registering a 280(-8). UAB’s 556 (-20) is a 36-hole record, as well.
McDonald has led the way for the Blazers, shooting a 134 (-8) through the first two rounds of play. The Mobile, Ala. native used six birdies against one bogey in the second round to catapult him into second place heading into Tuesday’s final round.
Not far behind was junior Paul Dunne. Dunne is 141 (-3) after two rounds of competition. The junior was four-under in the afternoon session, putting him in a tie for eighth place.
Sophomore Martin Rohwer finished one stroke behind Dunne after two rounds. After a par-round in the morning, Rohwer rebounded with a two-under second round, which is good enough for a tie for 10th place.
Seniors Sam Love and Thomas Sutton wrapped up the Blazers’ lineup, as both are tied for 21st place with a 143 (-1). Love shot a 69 (-3) in the first round, while Sutton rebounded from a first-round 75 (+3) with a 68 (-4) in the afternoon.
Sophomores Will Cannon and Ryan Davies and freshman Henry James all participated as individuals. James was nine-over for the day, while Cannon and Davies were 11-over.
“We are 67 percent of the way there,” Murray concluded. “We need to play well tomorrow and hopefully we get the job done. We will have to go out and win it tomorrow. I never think it is going to be handed to you. We just need to keep doing more of the same.”
