HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The UAB women’s soccer team (8-3-0, 1-1-0) recorded its eighth victory of the year as it defeated Marshall (6-3-1, 1-1-0), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the team matched the most victories it has recorded in a single season since 2010.
“It was a tight match throughout,” head coach Harold Warren stated. “We played a good first half. In the second half, we fatigued, but kept pushing. We had a great opportunity from Johanna late in the game. She put in a world-class goal, it was beautiful.”
Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes of action. UAB held a 10-8 edge in shots in the first frame, with two drawing the attention of Marshall junior goalkeeper Lizzie Kish, the reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week. Senior midfielder Abby Phillips and junior midfielder Johanna Liney each had a shot on frame in the first half, but neither could make it past Kish.
Out of the break, Marshall came out on the attacking front. The Thundering Herd put three shots on the UAB goal in the first 23 minutes of the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Courtnie Northern was able to turn the host team each time.
In the 79th minute, UAB finally broke through. Liney drove into the Marshall box and drilled a shot into right corner to give the Blazers a late 1-0 advantage. Liney’s third goal of the year would be the game-winner and seal the squad’s first Conference USA victory of 2013.
“You have to give credit to Marshall head coach Kevin Long,” Warren stated. “He has done a fantastic job with this program. For us, it was good to beat a good team on a Sunday on the road.”
UAB will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 4 when it hosts UTEP. The match marks its first home game since Sunday, Sept. 8. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at West Campus Field.
