BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women’s soccer team will be on the road this weekend, playing two matches away from the friendly-confines of West Campus Field. First, the team will head to Conway, S.C. as they take on Coastal Carolina Friday night at 6:00 pm. On Sunday, the Blazers will play Alabama in Tuscaloosa at 7:00 pm.
Last time out, the Green and Gold came away with two victories at home. The squad defeated Troy 6-2 on Friday, Sept. 6, then scored a 3-2 victory against South Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 8.
“We lost our first game at home to Ole Miss, so we really wanted to win last weekend,” senior captain Amy Harrison stated. “It was great to get those wins at home for our fans.”
With two victories this past weekend, the Blazers raised their win total to five in 2013. The team is off to its best start since 2009, when the team was undefeated and untied after six matches.
The team has already doubled the amount of victories they had last season, when they won two contests. In addition, the Blazers have registered 19 goals in six games. In 2012, the Green and Gold scored 18 goals in 19 games.
“The key reason we have been able to do so well this season is because of our ability to finish,” said Harrison. “Last year, we weren’t able to do that. We only had 18 goals and we already have more than that this season.”
The Blazers have had 11 different players score this season. That marks the most players to record a goal in one season since 2004. 11 players registered a goal that year, as well.
