UAB Men's Golf Finishes Third In Japan

TANAGURA, Japan – Fueled by three top 10 individual finishes, the UAB men’s golf team took home third place at the Topy Cup on Thursday. The Blazers recorded a three-round total of 829 (-11) at the Tanagura Country Club.
Tohoku Fukushi University was crowned the team champion, finishing 10 strokes ahead of the Green and Gold. No. 5 Washington was the top American men’s golf program in the field, taking second place. The Huskies were only one stroke ahead of UAB.
Individually, Kenta Konishi and Taihei Sato of Tohoku Fukushi University took medalist honors. Each player recorded a 203 (-7) for the three-round event. Senior Sam Love was the top finisher from an American team, coming in second place overall after recording a 204 (-6).
Love had his most impressive outing yet of his collegiate career. His first-round 65 (-5) was a career-low round. Through 36 holes, he owned a score of 132 (-8), also a career-best. The Trussville, Ala. native finished in 204 strokes (-6), his best tournament score at UAB.
Fellow senior Wilson McDonald finished in a tie for eighth place after shooting a 207 (-3), his best 54-hole score as a Blazer. McDonald also set numerous personal-bests in Japan, registering his lowest round, a 66 (-4) in the second round, and low-36 hole score, 137 (-3).
Redshirt senior Thomas Sutton was one stroke behind of McDonald, scoring a 208 (-2) en route to a 10th-place finish.
Sophomore Martin Rohwer tied for 15th place, shooting a 210 (E). Like Love, Rohwer recorded his best 18, 36, and 54-hole scores of his collegiate career while in Japan.
Junior Paul Dunne was the final Blazer to compete, recording a 23rd-place finish. Dunne tallied a 214 (+4) for the event.
The UAB men’s golf team will be back in action in two weeks when it hosts the 2013 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate hosted by Graeme McDowell. The three-round event will be held at the Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club from Monday, Sept. 30 – Tuesday, Oct. 1.
