Round One Results
TANAGURA, Japan – UAB senior Sam Love is on top of the individual leaderboard after the first round of the Topy Cup at Tanagura Country Club. Love registered a 65 (-5) on Tuesday. Overall, the UAB men’s golf team is in third place after recording a 280 (-6) during the first round of competition.
“It was a solid performance overall,” head coach Alan Murray said. “The course here is very fair. If you hit good shots then there is a chance of a good score. There are some tight holes, so if you don't have your best stuff then it can be a challenge. I was proud of how all the guys stuck to their game plans and fought as hard as they could.”
Love played bogey-free golf en route to his lowest round of his collegiate career. Teammate Martin Rohwer was not too far behind, scoring a 67 (-3) on the day. Like Love, Tuesday’s first-round performance marked a career-best for Rohwer and did not include any bogeys.
“Sam has won at Kiawah Island before and had some great finishes this past summer, so he knows what it's like at the business end of a leaderboard,” Murray commented. “He just needs to keep playing how he has been and see where it takes him.”
“Martin played superb and I was really happy for him to shoot his lowest round in a college tournament,” Murray stated. “He has so much ability and him playing well makes us a really strong team.”
Paul Dunne, Wilson McDonald, and Thomas Sutton all shot a 71 (+1) on the first day of play to complete the Blazers’ lineup.
“We have a motivated group of lads,” Murray concluded. “They will be giving it their all again tomorrow, so I am excited to see how we fare against some excellent teams.”
UAB will return to the golf course on Wednesday morning for the second round of the three-round event.
