THE WOODLANDS, Texas ----- Current UAB golfers Sam Love and Wilson McDonald, along with former Blazer Jason Shufflebotham, turned in impressive showings at the 107th Southern Amateur Championship this past weekend.
The event, held at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas, included a field of nearly 200 golfers and some of the top amateurs from around the world.
Love, a Trussville, Ala. native, enjoyed an outstanding weekend of play as he tied two other golfers for first place in regulation at 276. Zachary Olsen of Cordova, Tenn., who tied Love and Joey Garber of Petoskey, Mich. with a 12-under par score, captured the tournament title with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Love, who will be a senior at UAB in 2013-14, turned in a blistering final round Saturday with a 6-under 66 to vault into the three-way tie. During the four rounds, Love had 21 birdies and only four bogeys.
Meanwhile, UAB's McDonald, a product of Mobile, Ala., placed in a tie for 20th after his final round 71 on Saturday. McDonald finished with a score of 4-under par, opening with a 67 on the first day of the tournament.
Shufflebotham, who finished his eligibility at UAB with the 2012 season, finished in 52nd place overall with a score of 4-over. The Prestayn, Wales native had scores of 69 and 70 in the second and third rounds, respectively, and sandwiched those scores between a 76 on day one and a 77 in Saturday's final round.
